Shubh Raj’s ‘Con Killer’ Brings Love, Obsession And Trauma Into A Gripping Psychological Thriller.

Produced and headlined by 23-year-old Shubh Raj, the 63-minute psychological thriller explores the fragile and often dangerous boundary between love, obsession, rejection, guilt and unresolved trauma.

Written and directed by Ujjwal Srivastava, ‘Con Killer’ revolves around Shiva, played by Shubh Raj, a young corporate professional whose seemingly successful life begins to collapse when emotional insecurity and unresolved feelings take control of his mind. Rather than presenting a straightforward romantic story, the film takes audiences into the darker psychological spaces created when love turns into obsession and rejection becomes difficult to accept.

At the beginning of the film, Shiva appears to be on a promising career trajectory. A major professional promotion places him in charge of his company’s Delhi operations, giving him the confidence that his personal and professional life is finally moving in the right direction. However, beneath this composed exterior lies an emotionally vulnerable individual still carrying the weight of past heartbreak.

The turning point arrives when Shiva makes a grand public proposal to his colleague Priya, only to face a sharp rejection. What could have been an ordinary moment of disappointment becomes a deeply destabilising experience for him. His fragile emotional state begins to deteriorate, with guilt, anger, insecurity and obsession gradually influencing the way he perceives reality.

Seeking an escape from the emotional turmoil, Shiva travels to Dehradun, using a college reunion as a pretext for the journey. But the change in location fails to provide the closure he is looking for. Instead, the nostalgic surroundings trigger memories of his former partner, Tanya, bringing unresolved emotions back to the surface.

This movement between Delhi’s corporate environment and Dehradun’s nostalgic landscape gives ‘Con Killer’ an important visual and emotional contrast. The film uses its locations not simply as backgrounds but as part of Shiva’s psychological journey. As his memories, fears and present circumstances begin to overlap, the distinction between what is real and what is shaped by his troubled mind becomes increasingly complicated.

Coming from a non-film background without an established family legacy in entertainment, Raj has approached the project from the ground up, taking an active role in financing, logistics, talent coordination and production management.

The making of the film also presented practical challenges associated with independent filmmaking. Access to verified cast and crew networks, location permissions and production vendors can often become major hurdles for newcomers. Despite these challenges, the team secured official permissions from the Uttarakhand Film Development Council (UFDC) for filming across Dehradun, including locations such as DBS Global University and Saphience School.

Visually, ‘Con Killer’ is shaped by the cinematography of DOP Jaidev Bhattacharya, while actors Gunjan Nailwal, Anamika Raj and Ansheikaa Sharma join Shubh Raj in the cast. Together, the team aims to build a world where the emotional instability of the protagonist remains central to the storytelling.

The completion of ‘Con Killer’ has also led to the next chapter of Shubh Raj’s larger filmmaking vision. The challenges encountered during production inspired the creation of NovaX Entertainment, a New Delhi-based startup designed to address some of the accessibility issues faced by independent creators. The company is also preparing to introduce a digital media platform app intended to connect indie creators with verified talent, crew, locations and audiences.

Yet, before that larger vision takes shape, ‘Con Killer’ stands as the project that started the journey. More than simply a psychological thriller, the film attempts to explore what happens when rejection, heartbreak and unresolved memories begin to alter a person’s perception of reality.

With its intense subject matter, emotionally layered protagonist and atmospheric Dehradun setting, ‘Con Killer’ promises to offer audiences a darker and more introspective take on relationships and psychological trauma.
